yes, post surgery snack plate FTW! not so much on meeting the goals on the intermittent fasting tho. I enjoyed reading the answers and happy to hear this is a thing people do. I might try it again under better circumstances and break the fast with some protein. I didn't really understand the WHY tho...I get what happens during a fast. But is to strictly to lose weight? I do have a tummy (hot, right? :) but don't know if there's another goal besides just losing fat?

It also enables the body to focus on repair and maintenance because it’s not spending all its time processing incoming food. And, as @submissive-seeking explained in her biochem-nerd info yesterday, there are benefits for insulin regulation etc.
Intermittent fasting mimics SOME of the life extension benefits observed in (extreme) calorie restriction diets.
The theory relates to telomeres.
WARNING basic DNA nerdy stuff ahead …..
DNA is basically a recipe for you stored in a twisted zipper shape. So living means stuff wears out and you need to make more stuff to replace it. The effects of aging are basically this process getting more and more disorganized and unable to keep up with need, while maintaining quality control.
Okay, now imagine a twisted zipper. Untwist and then unzip. Notice the zipper effect is achieved by uneven fragments being pushed together. Great for a zipper! Not so much if you need to make a carbon copy of just one side as a blue print to recreate the zipper…
You end up needing to “cut” the bottom off to make it work. So we’re all born with a certain amount of “extra” programmed in – telomeres. Some of us have a lot and will get to live long, long, l o n g lives, barring disease or traumitic end. But ALL of us are limited by that telomere number.
Now for how diet effects it ….
The “fasted state” is a stressor to the body. The body adapts to it by becoming more efficient AND slowing down cellular processes (cellular respiration, growth, etc.). That increased efficiency, produces less waste products and that increases life of cells in general. Combined with the slowing of reproduction of cells, those limited number of telomeres goes a lot farther, hence increased life span. (That’s the current working theory)
So, the “trick” with keto, low carb, and intermittent fasting is it “tricks” the body into adapting as if you’re stuck in a brief famine, without the actual starvation.
The one thing EVERYONE can benefit from is understanding the insulin factor….
Most every cell in your body has insulin receptor sites. It’s the “how” of getting glucose into cells for energy. The faster your blood sugar rises, the more insulin your body pumps. So if we think of insulin receptors as ears and insulin as sound, you can start to see why insulin resistance is such a problem. Type II Diabetes should be called hyper insulinemia! The more you scream into an ear, the louder and louder you need to be. But eventually, you’ll go deaf and loud won’t matter. Same with insulin receptors. Soon your poor pancreas is pumping all it can. But it’s not enough and your blood sugar stays high cuz it can’t get into the cells. Welcome to Type II Diabetes and medication.
But long before that, you’ll store more fat, have bouncing blood sugars (including low), and unpredictable ravenous hunger. And even “impaired fasting glucose” has long term consequences, especially to blood vessels (read here heart, brain, eyes, erections, etc.).
If you do NOTHING else in your life, (and yes, this is the money shot) please ditch “sugar” sodas, clarified (clear) juices (same as sugar sodas), white bread, white flour, white rice, white potatoes, and refined breakfast cereals. Choose unsweetened, or zero calorie over sweetened drinks. Choose whole over processed anything. Choose brown breads, whole wheat flour, brown rice, and sweet potatoes with the skin instead. And completely ditch high fructose syrup from all those condiments!
